Andy Harper

Through exploring the physical process of painting Andy Harper has developed a unique and personal language of painted marks that is the result of hard work, patience and dedication as much as creativity and inspiration. A lecturer on the Goldsmiths College MFA, he splits his studio practice between London and Cornwall.

Interviewed by Robert Phoenix

“My sense of what I do, day to day, is actually really menial tasks; keeping the brushes wet and clean enough, making the surface smooth enough, we’re talking hours of wet sanding, it’s like labourer stuff, it’s stuff that a builder won’t do, and will get someone on minimum wage to do. That’s another reason why this perception of an artist being struck by inspirational lightning in a studio somewhere just feels so far detached from the day to day making of work.”
